SUMMARY:Culverts by Mina Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Culverts is the theme for the May\, 2023 exhibit at Partners Gallery in Mendocino. Mina Cohen is the featured artist for the show opening May 11\, 2023 with a reception to meet the artist Second Saturday\, May 13 from 5-7 pm. The focus of the exhibit is mixed media and collaged paintings of culverts removed from under the hauling road alongside Big River several years ago when Big River watershed became a state park. \n\nThe old culverts created a massive sculpture alongside the road at the gravel pit. Some people formed the pieces into sculptural works\, and then eventually all these interesting structures were removed. Cohen photographed the heaps and scraps of metal and created collages that recreate the sculptural forms into paintings. These works reflect the challenge of depicting three dimensions in two dimensional form and with a limited palette. The resulting images are reminiscent of human organs or underwater vegetation. \n\nThe exhibition continues through June 5\, 2023. The gallery is open Thursday through Monday 11am to 5 pm and is located at 45062 Ukiah Street\, Mendocino.
